STEPS TO ENTERING COLLEGE

1. SOUL-SEARCHING: Think about what career you want to pursue. You may have to write down activities that you enjoy as well as activities that you are good at. For example, you may enjoy writing, and you may be good with solving problems.

2. LOCATE POSSIBLE SCHOOLS: You may find that the college you want to go to does not offer the degree that you are seeking. For instance, you are serious about becoming a Registered Nurse, but your local college or university does not have the program. You could actually take your general education classes and transfer to another college at a later date, however. Please know that all classes won't transfer over. If you're lucky they will. Still, if a college refuses to accept one or more of your classes, you will have the opportunity to appeal.  Please save each syllabus (course outline given to each student by each professor at the start of the semester).

3. NARROW THINGS DOWN: When you have a list of colleges, you must now give them a call or visit their web site.

4. CONTACT: Contact the college either by phone or email.
BY PHONE: Ask for the admissions department, and ask them to send you an information packet for PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS.
BY EMAIL: Look for the link PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS or the ADMISSIONS SECTION. You may also want to look for a specific department. For instance, if you're interested in becoming a nurse, then you would look for the nursing department. BE SURE TO LOOK FOR COLLEGE DEADLINES.

COLLEGE TIPS

1. If you have no prior college experience, a great place to start your education is with a community college. They have smaller classes, and have less strict entry requirements.

2. If you have never taken the SATs, you may need to take the college's entrance exam.  Don't worry, the test is just to gauge where you are academically.

3. You may have to take pre-college classes. Don't be too upset. It is in your best interest, taking pre-college level classes will help prepare you for college-level classes.

4. When you decide to go to college, make it a priority. College is hard work, and will demand a great deal of your time. However, when you finish, the sense of accomplishment is extraordinary.
