Casey Herring seems to be your typical nine year old child. He loves his school, his church, and his family. He enjoys several pets; a dog, two cats, two aquariums full of fish and a rabbit. He is fascinated by big construction equipment and is eager to help work on broken lawn-mowers or anything mechanical. He also likes to argue with his older sister. And like most 9 year olds he hates taking out the trash.
However, for as typical as he seems Casey has had his share of out of the ordinary experiences. Casey is visually impaired due to a rare recessive genetic eye disease called Achromatopsia.

He has worn glasses since he was 7 months old and is considered legally blind. He is a large print reader.
As of December 23, 1998 Casey joined another group of rare diseases. He was diagnosed as having Idiopathic Dilated Cardiomyopathy. He now waits on a heart transplant list for a new heart. Here's his story.

DEC. 23 Casey was taken in to the doctor because he was having some shortness of breath and trouble eating. His appetite was not good and he had started to lose weight. One hour and an x-ray later he was on his way to a local cardiologist's office. There it was determined that he was suffering from congestive heart failure and an enlarged heart. He was then sent to a hospital with a pediatric cardiologist in Little Rock, 3 hours away from his home.

Dec. 24 Casey has idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. The doctor says he will need to have a heart transplant.

DEC. 25 Casey spent Christmas as one of two children on the pediatric floor of the hospital. His condition is improving as his lungs empty some of the fluid they had collected.
