George W. Henderson of Wood County, Virginia (now WV), tried to sue David Putnam of Marietta, Ohio for assisting slaves escape from his plantation from 1847 to 1851.
In 1852, the case was thrown out of court for lack of evidence.

They were the Washington County champions. The only person in the picture that I can identify is my maternal grandmother, Mary Eileen (Hayes) Roddy (front row, second from left).

Eugene Harris Bell, and his wife Helen Marie Davis.
Taken about 1915 outside their home in Marietta, OH.
Gene Bell died in Phoenix about 1980, and his wife Helen died in 2000. She was 104 years old. She had three daughters, all of whom are still alive.
The Bell family history is well-documented, in a book by John Evans. He may have given one to the historical society.
I have been doing some genealogy of family. The Bells are my husband's family (grandparents). I found in the Census of 1900 proof that Helen Davis was adopted and was not the natural child of F.C. Davis and his wife Sadie McGee. Do you know how I can find any further documentation? I don't even know what F.C. stood for (sometimes it is written as Eff!).
I know that when Helen's uncle McGee died, she was listed as the only heir to his money, but that doesn't mean he was her father... but this could be a clue.
