German Cities and States - Family Origins

Our ancestors came from many areas of Germany.
The following is a brief list of locations that we are interested in exploring.
Hesse - Dexbock/Biedenkopf, Werdohl
Thuringia - Kaltennordheim, Langensalza
Wuerttemberg - Lustnau, Tubingen, Rohrbronn
Saxony - Bautzen
Other locations: Stutgart, Lutzdorf, Kottweinsdorf

Family surnames: Weide, Leidig, Hartung, Domschke, Helbing, Schmidt, Rudroff/Rutrof, Forster, Heusel, and Rupp.

We have identified significant information for these ancestors and much of this data needs confirmation via source data. We are hopeful that there will be other persons searching for ancestors in Germany with the same names, and that this web site will be a point of contact.

Our German Roots & History

Our primary interests are:
1. The Leidig family of Rohrbronn and Tubingen. Bernhard and Katherine Leidig came to the USA in October 1891. They booked passage on the S.S. Russia, a ship of the Hamburg-American Line. They arrived at the Port of Baltimore and settled in the City of Baltimore. They came to this country with five children. Two older children, Katherune and George had emigrated from Germany earlier. They arrived at Castle Gardens, New York.
2. The Weide family. The Weide family originated in Dexbach/Biedenkopf. David Weide came to the USA and settled in Baltimore. He married Johanna Domschke in April 1906. They raised their family in Baltimore and David worked for the B&O Railroad.
3. The Schmidt family with German roots in Kaltennordheim, Germany. Johann Kaspar Adam Schmidt emigrated to America. He left his father Sebastian and mother Anna and a brother Karl behind.
4. The Brandt family of Minden, Germany.
5. The Heusel and Rupp families of Lustnau/Tubingen.
6. The Rudroff family of Kottweinsdorf. Johann Rudroff owned and operated a water mill named Sachsenmuhle near Gossweinstein in 1868. The family sold it and emigrated to America in 1884. They sailed on the ship Hermann.

Current Research

Any information is of interest and importance. Family lore and history is of particular interest. This information goes beyond the basic genealogy data. What was their employment or trade? Were they city or country folk? What prompted them to leave Germany?
The possibility exists that there are distant relatives looking for the same information and trying to explore their family history and genealogy. I would like to make contact with them. My e-mail address is: wenglefamily@aol.com
OR use the contact me bar via e-mail at the bottom of this page if a member of AOL.
An update: Subsequent to creating this home page we have made contact with Weide family cousins in Dexbach. We are in regular correspondence with them, and it has been very rewarding. We continue to search for ancestors and living relatives in Deutchland.
