Breeding Goals at Sepp-Lok

Our goals are simple. Breed, raise and train the finest sleddogs we can. We do not cheapen ourselves or our dogs by posting pictures of dogs bred by others taken from bad angles while the dog is blowing coat and saying they are "The Norm" for an alternate breeding program. We do not then post a picture of one of our dogs in good coat taken from a complimentary angle and indicate that because it looks prettier, it must, therefore, be better.

The founder of our breed believed in performance dogs. He believed in the heart and soul of great sleddogs. He bred for the finest racing dogs the world has ever known. His dogs shattered records, won more than just races, they won the love and loyalty of elite racing enthusiasts the world over. They were so much more than just companions, made for so much more than just recreation or hauling wood and supplies. Their legacy is the lifes breath of the sleddog, to ignore it is a crime, to pretend it doesn't matter is a sad waste of all these dogs ever were and all they could be. There are so many things these dogs can be, the least important of them all is a status symbol for an individual, or a tool to prove a point. We care little about the kennel names on our dogs pedigrees, we breed Seppalas, the greatest we can, they are SEPPALAS, bred to be what we believe Leonard Seppala himself would race if he were still with us. The kind of dogs that could have won for him, worked for him, been brave and bold and strong for him. The same kind of dog that proved itself so well to the racing world when it came to this country, that it became the premier, the standard by which all were held and the starting place for most of the finest racing kennels in the world, whether they remained purebred or pursued elite racing by infusing other dogs into their lines.

The Sepp-Lok Kennel will continue to breed, raise, train and race our Seppala Siberian Sleddogs in the footsteps of the man who started it all for our breed. We follow his goals, pursuing a truly elite sleddog. We will prove them in the only way there is for a sleddog to truly prove it's metal, on the race trails in competition with their peers.

Unlike others, we will not put down the breeding practices of others in an attempt to hold our own dogs up as the finest there are, we will not say our way is the only way, or even the best. It is the best way for us and that is enough. Our dogs will work hard to prove as individuals that they are worth breeding, they will not stand on their pedigrees alone. We will sell them into homes that may never run them at all, as well as into homes that will, for the future of the Seppala lies in the hearts of the people who know them, and the more that know them, the more vibrant that future can be. Some will be emissaries for their breed on other paths than the race trails, though on the race trail is where they must always maintain their legacy, anything less would be an insult not just to them, but to the man who started it. Our thanks to Leonard Seppala, whose love of sleddogs brought these dogs to us, we hope he runs challenging trails forever.

Our future is in the people we reach, like the children here, who had their first lessons about sleddogs on a sled behind Seppalas and Alaskans both, so they could see the difference, learn all we could teach.
