Please come by and see my new dachshund page as of August 2002. See wiener
dogs hiking at the Pacific ocean, terrorizing small lobsters and plaster deer,
moving their home and murdering rats (ugh!). All this and more at Dachshunds
Rule!
My husband Joe and Shakti, our longhaired female doxie, pose with a new Dachshund Crossing sign which we erected near our driveway...to protect the construction trucks which drive all day past our house from our fierce wiener dogs.
Dachshunds are always doing funny and odd things (but if you have a dachshund of your own, I'm sure you already knew that!) This photo shows how I discovered our longhaired dappled doxie Gaudi one day....asleep with a smile on his face stuck between the slats of a chair.
This photo taken on the Oregon coast shows our two neutered male
dachsies pursuing some of their favorite things. Wotan digs in the sand for
critters while Gaudi sneaks up behind him and...well, you see. It never stops
Wotan from continuing to dig or chase his ball, though ... he just ignores Gaudi's
antics.
This summer we took a week-long trip in Washington state where we now live. The area we went to is called the Cascade Loop; below are some photographs we took of our dachshunds' adventures.
One place we visited was the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth. The town was extremely crowded and touristy and the weather in late June has very hot. This photo of us with Gaudi was taken on a trail that leads from the town to a small island.
After we left Leavenworth, we traveled to scenic Lake Chelan, one of the longest and deepest lakes in the USA. There are no roads that go further than a handful of miles along the shore, so the only way to see this area is by commercial passenger boat. With the daytime temperatures in the 90s, we couldn't leave the dachshunds behind so we rented a cage for the boat trips and off we all went. The dachsies had to be kept in the cage during the whole trip.
Wotan and Shakti look mournfully out at the camera from their prison cell.
The boat trip to the upper part of the lake was very upsetting to Gaudi and Wotan, as they had to be right next to the very noisy and smelly engines. Both Gaudi and Wotan have epilepsy and their very shaky and wide-eyed looks made us fear that they might have a seizure. Joe took Wotan out of the cage briefly and held him, but within minutes a crew member came by and told us that "the dog has to go back into the cage immediately".
Gaudi was very frightened towards the end of the trip and bug eyed and shaking.
I got into the cage as much as I could with him as you can see in this photograph.
Luckily the boat we rode back was much larger, so the dogs could be away from
the engines. At the end of our first boat ride we got to Stehekin Landing. There are no roads in this area so the only way to get into this large area (owned by the park system) is by boat or hiking. Joe is shown on a nearby hiking trail with the doxies.
Bridget poses at the Stehekin dock with Wotan, Shakti and Gaudi.
Oh, it was hot most of the time, and none of us were used to such weather anymore. It was a relief for the dachshunds when we got up into the mountains of North Cascades National Park a few days later and discovered a patch of old snow still on the ground. As soon as Wotan saw the snow he went wild and started rubbing his body all over the ice we found in a ravine. This picture shows him doing this...when he rubs himself like this on rough or cold surfaces we call it "going wormakin". Why? Well because he looks like a wiggly worm when he does this.
Once he finished rubbbing himself to cool off, he got excited by the snowballs we threw to him. Wotan barked and barked until we threw him another snowball which he tried to catch in mid-air to no avail. This action shot shows one of these exciting moments.
Bridget and the three doxies pose in front of the Liberty Bell...the most spectacular mountain in the North Cascade National Park.
Wotan is a mighty hunter and sometimes he bags his prey. This photo shows him very proudly displaying the rodent he caught and did in near our garden.
Wotan tracked this rodent in the blackberry bushes along our garden fence for an hour before he snatched him as he ran away. Shakti tried to join in the hunt but as in the past, she was not as fast as Wotan and he triumphed.
To end this page on a lighter note, here is a cute dachshund cartoon I found which shows us what dachsies do when their owners are not around. I'm finding that I've become overwhelmed by the amount of email I get from my dachshund web pages and am embarrassed at how long it takes me to reply as I rarely get on AOL to read email. So as of March 2003 I have removed my email link and instead have a guestbook link where you are welcome to come by and leave comments or questions or just read what other dachshund lovers have written. Sign my Guestbook!Read my Guestbook! Want to take a trip back in time to when Wotan and Shakti were young puppies?
Then stop by and see the web page I made in the Spring of 2002. There are quite
a few cute portraits and action photos of them as dachshund puppies. The text
tells of how we got the names Wotan and Shakti, what they mean and also talks
about the defect Wotan was born with (which hasn't held him back in his life).
Please stop by and see it at Dachshund
Puppies: Wotan and Shakti Come see another wiener dog page entitled "Adventures with Dachshunds". You'll

and so much more! Be sure to have your speakers turned on for the whole experience.
