Dachshund Puppies:Wotan and Shakti Welcome! Wotan and Shakti bark hello to you and any dachshunds in the room

What a cute dachshund puppy! This is the very first photograph I ever took of Wotan (pronounced Vo-ton). He's about 6 months old in this photo. Right now he's 11 years old but he still has the same beautiful sparkling deep brown soulful eyes. Wotan was born in a rural home where the people raised dachshunds. More of a backyard breeder type of deal than really knowledgeable breeders I later realized. The owners had about a dozen dachshunds and they did allow them in the house but it seems that they were quite interbred with each other. Wotan's father was probably also his uncle and maybe even his grandfather too. Whatever....it was like that. Wotan hadn't sold and they probably were going to keep him for breeding as he was 6 months old when we got him.

Right before this photo of me and Wotan was taken we had just arranged to buy him. We didn't notice when we saw him because of all the confusion amid all the dachshunds and the owners children that Wotan's rear legs were not shaped right. I don't know what the problem really is.....years of asking vets about it never got me an answer. All I know is his rear legs are very stiff in appearance and wide apart. He is not able to run. He walks fine, although from the rear you can see it's stiffly. Fast walking he's fine at, but when he wants to go faster instead of running he hops. He can hop very fast and for long distances. Almost daily for his whole life I/we have taken him on long walks or hikes of 3 to 10 miles a day. He's never had any problem with this and is in very good shape. Vets always comment on how muscular and sleek he is and what wonderful shape he's in. Wotan is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of dachshunds :)

Wotan says "what the @$%&*# is that thing?" Wotan has always been a great killer of balloons and soap bubbles. Other dachshund web pages of mine show more examples of Wotan "killing" balloons. This was the first balloon Wotan ever saw and it was a strangely shaped one. You know how people sometimes tie balloons to their mailbox to mark the driveway for a party? Well Wotan always wants to kill those too if we walk by some and it's difficult to get him to leave them unmolested!

Wotan with his very first toy. At the breeders house where we got him the dachsies didn't have any toys. The breeders told us Wotan and the others used to play with rocks outside. Hmmmmmm. That's not a proper toy for a noble dachshund! Perhaps it was Wotan's early imprinting with small rocks that got him to adore and obsesses with small rubber balls. When we got him this squeak toy he hadn't seen a ball yet though. He loved playing with this rubber hot dog and actually didn't destroy it for weeks. Later on any squeak toy given to him would be demolished in minutes.

Dachshund puppy meets human baby. The first encounter for both. As you can see both were puzzled and interested in each other (although the baby seemed more thrilled by the puppy than the other way around).

This was Wotan's first "bed". For almost 2 full days after we got Wotan he hid under the bed in our room and wouldn't come out....not even for food. That's how upset he was to leave his dachshund family:( I even called the breeder to ask if this was normal and ask what could I do to get him out from under the bed? She had no suggestions and seemed totally uninterested in him...once she sold the puppies that was that for her it seemed. Eventually he came out to eat and I made him this box as then he would have a little private space with a roof to go into if he wanted. I drew pictures of Wotan our dachshund king on the box as you can see. He did like to sit in there...until the day he ripped the box apart. Then we got him a regular dog basket, although he slept in our human's bed almost every night.

Wotan's first Christmas in our house. By this time he was over 1 year old. I decorated him with bows from the presents. BTW you may wonder how we got Wotan's name as it's kind of unique in the USA for a dog. We were in Germany in 1990 for about 5 months and saw a dachshund wandering around the grounds of a school we were at for a very big party. This dog was alone and prowled around very confidently with tremendous self assurance. He knew what he wanted! And having anything to do with any of the humans there was not it. Hours later we heard someone call him to go home and they called him Wotan. I liked the name immediately. It sounded so powerful. Turned out it is the name of the chief Nordic god (aka Odin or Woden); a fearless warrior. We decided right then that when we got back to the States we would buy a dachshund and name him Wotan. Our German friends laugh when we tell them his name. They say it is a common name for dogs, but always big dogs like German Shepherds or Rottweilers.

For almost 9 years we lived in Southern Oregon, so everyone who came to visit us wanted to see the famous Crater Lake National Park which was in the area. Wotan is shown here on his first visit to Crater Lake in the late Spring when snow was still on the ground...and then again in another shot at the lake in mid summer.

My favorite place in all of Oregon though is the magnificent coast. All 350+ miles of the coast is public property and you can hike on all beaches and clifftops freely. Here's a photo of Wotan's first visit to the ocean. Bandon beach has never seen a more commanding wiener dog striding across its sands as our Wotan!

Wotan was very lonely on the rare times we would both go out to eat or a movie and leave him home alone. He would howl and the people who lived next door would complain. So we got him a dachshund pal as a companion. And we named her Shakti. I liked the way it sounded. It's a Hindu name meaning "consort to the god" and as we were getting her as a companion to Wotan (the chief Nordic god) we thought it was appropriate. Shakti grew very fond of Wotan and he never barked or howled again when we left him in the house. They used to always sleep together and sometimes, as you can see here, in the most unusual positions. Only dogs would want to sleep like this! They still often nap together usually with Shakti laying over the top of Wotan.

Here's a picture of me holding our tiny dachsie puppy Shakti when we went to Lava Beds National Monument in northern California. She is so small in this photo it's amazing to me to see now. There is no way I could hold her this way now as she's the biggest of our dachshunds. She was always quite fearless and was exploring inside these deep dark lava tubes at the age of 2 months on her own when we put her down.

And here we'll leave them for now. Two puppies together for a lifetime under a blooming crab apple tree in Ashland Oregon.

You may notice that many of the web pages linked below of mine are about dachshunds. Why so much about dachshunds you non-dachshund loving people may ask? Well, I think Ann Gordon said it well when she wrote this in her book "The dachshund: a dog for town and country"; "Although I admire many other breeds, the dachshund is the dog for me. Dachshunds have enriched my life by adding the kind of joy, delight, devotion, and companionship that only they can bring. Dachshunds can try your patience one minute and amuse you the next. There is nothing to compare to a dachshund's expression when he looks lovingly at you with those wonderful, affectionate eyes, or the joy that is reflected in his whole demeanor as he eagerly greets when you return after being away from him. He is so amiable and loves to go places and do things with you, and you can do so many things with him. His small size makes it easy for him to be comfortable in almost any setting and makes him a suitable traveling companion. With his intelligence, cleverness, curiosity, and hunting instincts, he is able to learn to do many things and can successfully participate in many activities. Once you have shared your life and your home with a dachshund, your devotion to and love for this remarkable breed endures forever."
