![]() Latest update as of March 26, 2003
Well, Nick Nolte wasn't at the Oscars this year in person, but he was the butt of one of Steve Martin's big jokes during his opening monologue there. Nick Nolte's newest film "The Good Thief" opens April 2, 2003. Here is a photo from that film: Nolte Won Over In Hulk This story was in the San Francisco Chronicle
on March 6th. Nick Nolte recently acted in a film called "Northfork" which had its world premiere on January 21st, 2003 at the Sundance Film Festival. If you want to read a blurb on that screening check out this link: Sundance 2003: Northfork James Woods (another of my favorite actors BTW) also stars in this movie. The film will be released on July 11th, 2003 by Paramount and is about a town destined to disappear underwater forever with the construction of a new dam. Salesmen compete to convince longtime residents to abandon their homesteads. Meanwhile, a dying orphan dreams of escape with a band of eccentrics who are actually angels. If you want to read an article about the making of this picture check out this link: Stars at ease on Montana Movie SetProduction of this movie took place in the spring of 2002 in Montana (the towns of Augusta, Fort Peck, Glasgow and Great Falls) on a budget of $1.9 million. It has an official web site now atNorthforkbut so far there isn't much there. The last film Nick Nolte finished at this time is "The Good Thief," (which was known as Double Down during film production) the Neil Jordan-directed remake of the 1955 French film noir "Bob le flambeur." Nick Nolte's next film is "The Hulk". "The Hulk" is based upon the character published by Marvel Comics. Production started on 'Hulk' last March in Arizona, then moved on to San Francisco and Berkeley. The film will tell the tale of Dr. Bruce Banner who is exposed to Gamma Rays and transformed into the Hulk, a creature of incredible strength. Chased across the country by the military, he runs into a man named Crusher Creel who can take on the properties of things he touches. Bruce Banner's father Dr. Brian Banner will be played by Nick Nolte. To the right here is a photo of how Nick will look playing this role:
From E!Online a report that states "Spies in San Francisco report that while Nick Nolte filmed The Hulk in town, he found his own neighborhood hangout. Nolte plays Brian Banner, Bruce's (Eric Bana) dad, in the upcoming superhero flick. Late at night, in the bathrobe that has become his signature, Nolte would wander into Tosca Cafe, an old-school Italian bar in North Beach." I have received a number of emails from Pacific Street Film Projects who are finishing up a "reluctant" documentary on Nick Nolte for BRAVO Profiles. It's set to air March 30th 2003 on Bravo. Thanks Marcia for keeping me updated on this. And double thanks for the Nick Nolte news videotape you sent me Marcia….great programs I never saw myself before on Nolte. I bet the Bravo show will be another one well worth seeing, so do tune it in if you get that channel. Here is a link to their web site about that documentaryNick Nolte: Bravo Profiles Just finished filming this month is a new film Nolte is working on called "Beautiful Country". It co-stars Tim Roth (who plays great villian roles). The film is about the son of an American man (Nolte) and a Vietnamese woman who searches for his own sense of identity. It is being directed by Hans Moland from a script by Terrance Malick who wrote and directed "The Thin Red Line" and "Badlands". Filming began on this film on October 16th, 2002 in Southeast Asia and the U.S. (10/28/02) Filming wrapped on March 1st, 2003 . The film will be released by Sony Classics. Nick Nolte Gets Probation, Counseling in DUI Case
I've moved the other stories on this subject to their own page so that we can concentrate here on what makes us all interested in Mr. Nolte….his acting! If you want to read more though about Nick Nolte's arrest and court proceedings you can go to this link: Nick Nolte 2002 arrest and court proceedings
On a happier note I also recently read about Nick Nolte appearing at the 27th Toronto International Film Festival in Canada where the above photo was taken. Robert Denerstein of the Rocky Mountain News wrote; "For me, the greatest thrill thus far has been riding on an elevator with Nick Nolte, who stars in Neil Jordan's The Good Thief, a remake of the French classic Bob le Flambeur. Nolte plays a heroin addict and gambler who handcuffs himself to his bed so that he can kick the habit. He wants to make one final score, a robbery at a casino. Nolte gives the kind of rumpled performance that stinks of cigarette smoke and too much living. On the elevator, Nolte looked more sedate, aside from a hairstyle that's, well, multi-directional." ![]() Here is the latest I have heard on the announced film which Nick Nolte had been scheduled to shoot......"White Jazz". I have heard or read that it's probably a no go (or as it's so well stated "in development Hell"). To read more details and why this is so check out: Coming Attraction: White Jazz After "The Hulk" Nick Nolte has another James Ivory film lined up to star in. This one is entitled "Le Divorce" the screen version of Diane Johnson's bestseller and production had been scheduled to begin in September 2002 in France.
Another film Nick shot in 2001 was "Investigating Sex" directed by Alan Rudolph. This movie is about a group of Bohemian men in the 1920's who decided to discuss at length the nature of sex, with their conversations recorded by two female stenographers (Campbell, Tunney). Eventually, however, the professional walls break down between them. It was filmed in Berlin Germany. "Investigating Sex" had its premiere on May, 2001 at the Seattle International Film Festival. Currently this film is seeking distribution in the USA. ![]() WENN had a blurb up on Jan 30, 2002 saying: "Hollywood veteran Nick Nolte is still young at heart - he spent the evening dancing with a bevy of beauties till 4am. Nolte, 61, showed off his dance moves in a cage with three scantily-clad young women in New York's trendy Suite 16 nightclub over the weekend. The thrice-divorced actor got so into the spirit of things, he finished off his moves by hanging upside down. He finally emerged from the nightspot at 4am, clutching a pair of knickers given to him by one of the dancers, Lady Ace." Variety ran a story in late Feb. 2001 about the Malibu Film Festival giving Nick Nolte a lifetime achievement award. I ran across a web site that claims to list the Malibu address of many film and TV stars homes. On that page they say "in the Point Dume area seven miles up the coast from the Malibu pier you'll find the home of Nick Nolte at 6153/6173 Bonsall Dr. Neighbors nearby include Robert Duvall, Cher, Dick Clark, and Rob Lowe"." Don't know if this is accurate or not.
Another short news story in a British newspaper in November 2001 said that Nick Nolte was lined up to film Peter Greenaway's new drama "The Tulce Luper Suitcase". The co-star on that one is to be Gary Oldman and it is being made in Utah and Luxembourg. The story focuses on 92 mysterious suitcases a fugitive has left around the world on his travels between the '20s and '80s.
Nick Nolte and Sean Penn starred on stage together in the Fall of 2000 in Sam Shepard's new play, "The Late Henry Moss". This was Nolte's first stage appearance in 25 years. Woody Harrelson also acted in this play. Variety said in its review by Dennis Harvey; "It's easy to imagine "The Late Henry Moss" as a pleasing 90-minute one act, its light trot through familiar authorial terrain just right for the intimate scale and potent local casting that define high-grade regional institutions like the Magic. For now, however, "Henry Moss" is more like an 800-pound gorilla: With Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, Cheech Marin and Woody Harrelson providing more star power than any S.F. stage has seen in decades, this three-hour, Shepard-helmed premiere is one Big Event that both flatters and overwhelms the very modest play lurking somewhere inside." Harvey had great praise for Nick Nolte's performance though saying; "As much as any contempo U.S. male, Nolte has built a screen resume approximating a great stage actor's range, turning diverse roles into tragicomic Lears and fools. (What a James Tyrone he'd make!) He's hardly stretching here, character-wise. Nolte's character Earl is the same crumbling, dissolute lug he's inhabited many times of late (including the film of Shepard's "Simpatico"). Still, it's an act that works every time. Betraying occasional stagefright, Nolte nonetheless lends Earl a luxuriantly lived-in malaise that mines laughs in the smallest grunt, slouch or swallowed cussout. It's a terrific performance." ![]() Nick Nolte appeared on the several tv shows in 2000 where he discussed his controversial health choices ("48 Hours" and "Larry King".) Mr. Nolte calls this his anti-aging regimen and it consists of him eating all organic food, taking 60 various pills (mostly mega doses of vitamins) a day and studying his own blood. He is a big vitamin buff and even injects vitamins. Nick says this on the subject: "I'm not really doing this for controversy. I'm doing this to find my own health." He says he feels much stronger and healthier since he's started this regimen. Most controversial of all is that Nick Nolte is also getting hormone replacements, which is an experimental course of action.Unfortunately he is still smoking cigarettes too. To see more on this subject check out this link to the "48 Hour" show: Nick Nolte Searches For Youth The films Nick Nolte starred in during 2000 were not successes at the box office or with the critics. His performances were often praised, but the films themselves received little acclaim.
Trixie (2000) was Director Alan Rudolph's dual ode to the screwball and noir genres. Nick Nolte played a double-talking politician. ![]() Another release in 2000 was "The Golden Bowl". In this adaptation of the Henry James novel, an American widower (Nick Nolte) and his daughter (Kate Beckinsale) live the high life in Europe, collecting art. Socialite Fanny Assingham (Anjelica Huston) befriends the pair and succeeds in marrying them off...the daughter to a compromised Italian prince (Jeremy Northam) and the widower to his daughter's longtime friend (Uma Thurman). Father and daughter come to realize that their spouses know each other quite well, and the presentation of a certain golden bowl starts the unraveling of the truth.
Getting to play in Nick Nolte in "The Golden Bowl" was a battle hard won. At a time when Nolte was hankering to get back into theater, Broadway was wooing him for a production called "The Unexpected Man". But Merchant and Ivory fought and won. The film got passable reviews on the whole. Trade paper Variety had praise for Nick's acting again in it's review of the film saying, "it's Nolte who provides the pic's most resonant performance."
The January 9, 2000 issue of the Toledo Ohio Blade newspaper has an interesting online interview with Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges about the film "Simpatico," The reporter says this about Nolte "He's pensive and funny, a hulking Woody Allen." Nick Nolte himself says this at one point in the interview: "The studios are out of the business of [making good films] and they're off buying land. It's kind of sad to see some of the studio guys I've known for 30 years trying to sell a kid's movie and convincing themselves that it's great art. There's nothing wrong with a young actor being [angry]. But Jeff is absolutely right. As Alan Arkin put so eloquently, 'I only do films that will increase myself and nothing that will detract.' " He also talks about making lower budgeted independent films and says: " I'm hoping next year to work for no money." Read the whole article
at Nolte, Bridges reflect on becoming elder statesmenAlso there is a big article about Nick Nolte at Salon dated Dec 14, 1999. Steve Vineberg says this about Nick: " Nick Nolte is like Clark Gable with an anguished soul.... like Gable and Mitchum, he's magically relaxed on screen and projects an outsize, sprawling likability. " You can find it online at Nolte online at Salon

"Simpatico,"did not get good reviews unfortunately. The official "Simpatico,"web site is at Simpatico. The Toronto Canada Sun has a short online article Nolte's Simpatico side The reporter mentions that "Nolte arrived in town the day before from the London set of James Ivory's film shoot of the Henry James' novel, The Golden Bowl, which might explain his non-Nolte-like white hair and goatee. " Another short article on Simpatico says this: " Nick Nolte says his sperm count is up and that his hair is dyed greyish-blond for a movie part. " You can find the whole article here:

If you are interested in reviews of Nolte's film "Simpatico" you can check some out at the following links (they have been very negative on the whole):
New York Times San Francisco Chronicle

A very interesting review is the one Charles Taylor wrote for Salon magazine at
The New York Times reviewer Stephen Holden did say about the film "The surprise of this offbeat, gawky movie, which has gripping performances by Nick Nolte Reviewer Peter Stack does say this about Nick Nolte in that film: "But with the exception of Nolte -- he alone has a handle on the wacky, radical spirit of Vonnegut's book -- these players are sabotaged by director Alan Rudolph's hyper- hokey style, making this film not only cheesy-looking but a major bore. Nolte is a riot as a closeted cross- dressing sales manager at a stereotypical mid-America auto dealership. NOLTE SCORES. Only Nolte seems to have the right temperament for hamming it up and making it seem weirdly believable. Bad movie, but Nolte gets new respect for rising above it." People magazine September 20, 1999 voted Nick Nolte as one of the worst dressed people of the year. Here is what they had to say:
"Film critic Pauline Kael once called Nick Nolte a "master of the inchoate, of the mixed-up" because of his penchant for playing troubled eccentrics. But the words could apply just as easily to Nolte's fashion approach: always put together, just put together in perplexing ways, as when the 58-year-old Affliction star steps out in a cashmere trench coat and Calvin Klein pajamas. "He's way over the top," complains A.B.S chief Allen Schwartz, who wishes the 6-foot Nolte would stick to being offbeat only when he's onscreen. "He looks too contrived." Star Wars costumer Trisha Biggar says Nolte "overperforms" when he dresses, adding, "He needs help." Still, as British designer Samantha Shaw philosophically notes, "he attracts attention-which is good for his profession." I am sorry that NBCi stopped hosting personal web pages suddenly thus losing the web space I needed for all my large photos of Nick Nolte I had online. There went almost 11 pages of over 120 large photos of Nick and at this time I can not find a server that can handle such large files. Grrrrrrr to NBCi!

Well, Nick Nolte didn't win the Academy Award as best actor for Affliction, but he did win the best actor award that same year from both the New York Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics!
Elia Kazan received the Lifetime Achievement award at the Oscars in 1999 and Nick Nolte was shown in the audience not applauding. This caused much controversy (for him and for actor Ed Harris) and I have received email about this. If you are curious about what this was all about or what the emails I received said, go to this link:

In 1998 I had reason to look up information on the web about Nick Nolte and I was *amazed* to find very little information on Mr. Nolte on the web no matter how thoroughly I searched. No one had a web site dedicated to Nick Nolte and very little other information was available.
After some thought I decided to start my own web site for Mr. Nolte and put up on the web some photos of him I have from my files and a good central collection of links to all Nick Nolte info that *is* out there on the web as well as links to reviews for all his films. On other pages of my Nolte site you can find a biography, filmography, quotes from him, reviews of his films, articles about him and lots of photographs.
