Bigham Families

THE BIGHAM FAMILIES

By the time of the Revolutionary War, Bigham families were found in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. There has been little documentary evidence to prove that the various families were related although documentation suggested through other related families and associates indicates there probably was a relationship.

The Bigham name is found in records and cemeteries in Pennsylvania before the 1750's. Evidence is found in Chester, Lancaster, York, and Cumberland Counties in the earlier years and Adams, Franklin, Perry, Juniata, and Mifflin counties as these counties were formed.

The John Bigham family is listed in church records in Augusta County, Virginia as early as 1748. Other variations of the Bigham name are also found here in the 1750's.

Five Bigham families were known to have been in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina before the Revolutionary War.Land records show these families were among the early families settling in the Steele Creek section. The post-revolutionary war period also saw Bighams in Union County North Carolina.

South Carolina saw Bighams arriving through the port of Charleston prior to the Revolutionary War and receiving land grants in the upper portions of the Piedmont section.
