BIGHAMS IN AUGUSTA COUNTY VA

Settlers began moving into Augusta County Virginia in the 1730's with greater numbers following in the 1740's. Among the earliest records of Bighams in the county is the Record of Baptisms by Rev. John Craig. This record lists on June 5, 1748 the baptism of John Bigham presented by John Bigham.

Augusta County Deed Book 2, page 469 lists a deed for 302 acres 25 Feb 1749 to John Bigham, farmer, where he now lives. A witness to the deed was George Bigham. Another deed recorded in Deed Book 23, page 286 on 18 Apr 1780 indicates John Bigham and Jane and Sarah Bigham, wife of John Bigham, deceased, delivered to William Scott the plantation in Beverly Manor John Bigham now lives on. It appears that John Bigham was dead by  March 16, 1774 when his estate was committed to John Bigham.

There are indications in the records that George Bigham was in Augusta County by November 1744 (added to list of tithables) and records in 1759 and 1769 that George Bigham had removed from the colony. In May 1779 a court case filed by John Anderson vs. George Bigham was recorded defendant deceased. There is also a reference to a George Bigham in the 1 May 1739 minutes of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Lancaster County PA as a juror in the tiral of John Shaw.
