Tom Green must be the smartest man alive. He has had a hit series on MTV, commercial endorsements, married into the Barrymore family, and actually got a major Hollywood studio to produce what has got to be the worst film I have ever watched this whole year. “Freddy Got Fingered” has Tom Greene playing an aspiring cartoonist who has an all out battle of the wills with his father, played by Rip Torn. The premise could have been funny, but Greene is too self absorbed with what makes him laugh to allow the casual viewer, who may not be familiar with his brand of humor, to even grow to understand him, let alone tolerate this mess of a movie. So unless you are really, really, really, into Tom Green or get his humor at the beginning, I doubt this film will satisfy anyone. In fact, I think people should pay Fox not to release it on home video.
Of course there is an unwritten rule in the universe that states, “If the movie is bad, then produce a good DVD and pray no one will notice.” “Freddy Got Fingered” is presented in a (1.85:1) aspect ratio that is anamorphic and includes a well mixed English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack as well as English and French Language Dolby Surround 2.0 options coupled with English Captions and Closed Captions and Spanish Subtitles encoded on to the dual layered DVD.
There are commentary tracks by Tom Green, Harland Williams, Marisa Coughlan, and Rip Torn as well as an audience participation track, but unless you are into self-mutilation, I see no reason why anyone would care to listen to anything related to this film. There are 6 deleted scenes with optional commentary by Tom Green and a (1.33:1) theatrical trailer and 4 TV spots and one soundtrack spot.
An equally retarded 3 minute PG version of the film is included for the really brain dead folks who enjoy this kind of junk. The menus are animated with animated transitions to mostly standard interactive still fame menus.
“Freddy Got Fingered” will debut on DVD-Video from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 and should be avoided at all costs. Purchased copies should be donated as land fill or sent to Tom Green at inconvenient moments for the of his life so he is reminded of the terrible and heinous crime he committed by making this film.
