Kirk Douglas stars as a government agent searching for his son (Andrew Stevens) who has been kidnapped for his telekinetic powers. Desperate, he hires a girl (Amy Irving) who also as psychic powers to find his son. Adapted by John Farris from his novel, the Brian De Palma thriller is more of a standard polished Hollywood film than his previous efforts and shares little similarity to De Palma’s other efforts from this time in the filmmaker’s career. A bit too long and slow moving for some, one wonders if De Palma had adapted the screenplay from the book, would the film have been more entertaining. Daryl Hannah and Denis Franz have small onscreen roles in the film and John Williams composed the soundtrack music for the film. Andrew Stevens starred in two television miniseries based on Author John Jakes’ “Kent Family Chronicles” entitled “The Bastard” and “The Rebels” in the 1970s.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s DVD Edition features an uneven anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) transfer. At times the film looks a bit washed out with minor flecks and grain while other scenes seem clearer. A new English Dolby Digital 4.0 Soundtrack is an improvement that brings out the music and effects better than ever before. An English Dolby Surround 2.0 Soundtrack and a French Language Monaural Soundtrack are included as listening options along with English Captions and Closed Captions and Spanish Subtitles.
A (1.85:1) trailer for “The Fury” is included along with trailers for Fox’s “Alien”, “The Fly ‘86”, “The Fly’58”, “Lake Placid”, and “The Omen.” A still gallery breaks up into eight sections that includes, behind the scenes photos, U.S. publicity stills, an outtake, U.K. lobby cards, French lobby cards, German lobby cards, U.S. lobby cards, a Japanese one sheet, a French one sheet, and a U.K. one sheet. The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“The Fury” is available on DVD-Video now from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
