In adapting his own novel “Hell House”, Richard Matheson creates a tapestry of unseen and suggested ghastly and grotesque unseen forces and perversions. A dieing wealthy man hires a group of paranormal investigators to prove the existence of life after death by examining a mansion where terrible atrocities once occurred. Among the team are actor Roddy McDowall, a medium and sole survivor of an earlier attempt to exorcise Hell House. This atmospheric film is a perfect companion for Director Robert Wise’s original cinematic adaptation of “The Haunting.”
Richard Matheson is an award winning writer whose novel “I Am Legend” was adapted into the 1964 Vincent Price film “The Last Man On Earth” and the Charlton Heston remake “The Omega Man. His other credits include the screenplay adaptations of Roger Coreman’s “The Fall Of The House Of Usher” and “The Pit And The Pendulum” as well as a contributing writer to many television projects including the original “Star Trek” television series.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s DVD Edition of “The Legend Of Hell House” features a brand new widescreen (1.85:1) transfer that despite a few flecks and grain, looks great on DVD with strong blood red colors contrasted against pale blues and solid blacks. A new English Dolby Digital 4.0 Soundtrack makes all of the creepy atmospheric music and sound effects come to vivid life like never before. The Original English Two-Channel Monaural Soundtrack and a French Language Monaural Soundtrack is included along with English Captions and Closed Captions and Spanish Subtitles.
The (1.85:1) theatrical trailer for “The Legend Of Hell House” is included along with trailers for Fox’s “Batman: The Movie”, “Bedazzled”, “Big Trouble In Little China”, and “Buffy The Vampire Slayer.” Like the other films released for this Halloween by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, the menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “The Legend Of Hell House” is available on DVD-Video now.
