John Cryer delivers a good performance as a Boston stockbroker hiding out in a suburban Delaware High School with only his cousin, the high school janitor, and his new found high school girlfriend in the know of his true identity. In pursuit are the FBI, who want him as a witness in a mob junk bond trial and the hit man assigned to make sure he never testifies While the film avoids some of the typical high school clichés, the film still feels more like a series of comic vignettes to showcase Cryer’s comedic skills rather than a cohesive whole. Cryer was popular after his role in “Pretty In Pink” and went on to appear in a few sitcoms like “The Famous Teddy Z.” Actress Annabeth Gish, who plays his love interest in the film, is now a part of the cast of “The X-Files.” The film is a bit dated with 80s music and fashions and the suburban high school students seem a bit more cosmopolitan for the time period when the film takes place and the country location, but if you don’t take the film too seriously it is still entertaining for what it is.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has released “Hiding Out” in an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio with an English Dolby Pro Logic Surround 2.0 Soundtrack and English Closed Captions encoded on to the DVD.  The transfer looks better than any other home video versions of the film with nice solid blacks; no color bleeding and very little grain. The picture does have a soft look to it, but overall it is still a nice clear transfer that should satisfy fans of this 80s film. The English Dolby Pro Logic Surround Soundtrack is well mixed.

The only extra feature is the theatrical trailer presented in a (1.85:1) aspect ratio. The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. On the flip side of the chapter selection list card is a picture of the film’s one-sheet artwork.

“Hiding Out” is available now on DVD-Video from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
