One of the best thrillers from the 1970s, they do not make films like “Marathon Man” anymore. Based on William Goldman’s novel, who also adapted the book into the film’s screenplay and directed by John Schlesinger and produced by Robert Evans, this is an intelligent thriller that makes one think as much as be jolted by the extraordinary story that works because it is a good story with good actors and not because there are flashy effects and stunts. Nazi war criminal Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier) returns to America with the assistance of a covert government agency to reclaim diamonds he has hidden within a safety deposit box at a NYC bank. Dustin Hoffman is a PhD student who discovers there is a lot more to his family’s history when his brother (Roy Scheider) turns up dead in his apartment and he suddenly becomes the target of shady figures aligned with Szell who think his brother told him about the diamonds and thinks they may no longer be safe.

Olivier was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for is role and Hoffman was going on 40, but looked young enough to play his college student character. This new anamorphic widescreen transfer is simply beautiful with a wonderful (1.85:1) transfer and a new English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack as well as a restored English Monaural Soundtrack that will still make you cringe when the famous dentistry scene plays on the home theater system. A French Monaural Soundtrack and English Captions and Closed Captions are also encoded on to the DVD.

There is a brand new documentary on this DVD entitled “Going The Distance: Remembering Marathon Man” with brand new videotaped retrospective interviews with Producer Robert Evans, Writer William Goldman, and Actors Dustin Hoffman, Roy Scheider, and Marthe Keller. The original featurette from the film’s production entitled “The Magic Of Hollywood: The Making Of Marathon Man” is also included along with some rare filmed rehearsal footage introduced by Robert Evans featuring Dustin Hoffman and Marthe Keller as well as other cast members and runs approximately 21-minutes and is presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio. The theatrical trailer wraps up the extra features included on this DVD.

The main menu features full motion scenes integrated with subtle animation with links to the standard interactive still frame menus that are easy to navigate. This is a great DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment. “Marathon Man” is available now.
