Cochlear Implants
The first cochlear implant was done in the 1950's.  In the years since, modifications have been made and improvements have been noted.  The implant still remains a controversial surgery for some people.  For others, it has become a valuable tool for enhancing their hearing.  Implants are happening at a younger and younger age, with some infants being implanted just under the age of a year.

In a small percentage of people, the implant has a failure rate of 1-5%.  Some have been successfully re-implanted with functioning restored.  Others get no benefit at all from the implant.

Even in the same family, one person can have tremendous success and the other could have many side effects with little benefit.

Improvements with implants are happening quickly, with new software programs being uploaded and companies are working on adding more channels to future implants.
