Wu-Wei Gung Fu is an extremely effective form of self-defense. It is not designed for competition, but rather for self preservation and self-discovery. The system developed by Sifu Joseph Cowles is based on the fighting method taught to him by the late Bruce Lee (Jun Fan).  Sifu Cowles was a student of Bruce Lee during the Seattle time period of Bruce's life. The system emphasizes hand trapping similar to Wing Chun Gung Fu while incorporating kicking, boxing, joint locking, and grappling. This system is very effective fighting method for individuals of any stature, and is especially effective for women.

Wu-Wei Gung Fu has evolved through continuous refinement and exploration of Sifu Cowles, and lineage successors like Sifu Joseph Purcell Jr.  Sifu Purcell is also an associate instructor under Sifu/Guro Dan Insanto.

My primary instruction  (1981-present) was through Sifu Purcell.  I also studied for five years (1983-1988) with Sifu Cowles.  I received my 1st dan black sash through 3rd dan black sash from Sifu Joe Purcell with Sifu Joe Cowles as approving witness.  Sifu Joe Purcell has inspired me through example, and because  of his ability, knowledge and friendship continue to find validity in all aspects of wu-wei gung fu.  My primary interests are in trapping and pressure chi-sao development.

I want to thank Sifu Jesse Glover for teaching and sharing his insight concerning the heavy pressure chi-sao, explosive punching, and Non-Classical Gung Fu  drills that I practice religiously.  Both Wu-Wei Gung Fu and Non-Classical Gung Fu compliment and enhance the incorporation of my judo experience.  However, all ranges of fighting are trained as well as weapon training throughout the Wu-Wei Gung Fu system.

Uchimata by Lonnie Ross

Judo is a martial art which develops physical coordination, physical and emotional confidence. Dr. Jiguro Kano founded Judo in 1882. He derived Judo from Ju-Jitsu. By eliminating the so called deadly techniques, Judo became a martial art that could be practiced at full speed with relative safety, and thereby increasing its effectiveness for self-defense. In 1964, Judo was recognized as an Olympic sport. Judo enhances balance, physical conditioning and mental confidence, along with effective self-defense. All these benefits are develop while practicing with mutual respect and benefit to yourself and your training partners.
