Hi!  I'm Rick and this is my wife Suzie.  Welcome to my page dedicated to Mid-Missouri Judo!

A little about Judo, and our club:
Judo is a martial art founded by Dr. Jigoro Kano, President of the University of Education in Tokyo, Japan in 1882.  Judo is a modification of the ancient martial art of Ju Jitsu (a form of hand to hand combat).  Dr. Kano made Ju Jitsu safer by removing the more dangerous aspects.  In doing so, Judo became a sport practiced around the world.  Judo is currently practiced by millions of people in over 186 countries.  It is second only to soccer in popularity.  Judo was the first Asian sport to be added to the Olympic schedule during the 1964 Tokyo Games.                                                                                                                                                                                   Judo is made up of four basic categories:  Throws, Pins, Chokes, and Armbars.          A competitive match can be won by one of the following ways:

1. Executing a standing technique so that your opponent lands flat on their back.

2.  Pinning your opponent on the mat for 25 seconds.

3.  Choking your opponent into submission ( by applying pressure to the carotid artery)
Chokes are conducted by individuals thirteen years old and older.

4.  Applying an armlock to the elbow of your opponent until they submit.
Armlocks are conducted by individuals seventeen years old and older.

For those not interested in Judo for the competitive aspect, Judo may be practiced in Kata form, a self defense form, or just as a non competitive sport.  As it is an excellent form of physical exercise combining strength training and cardiovascular activity. It improves balance, flexibility, and coordination!

Judo develops self discipline and confidence in all athletes.  It is based on respect for the traditions of the sport itself,  respect for parents, teachers, fellow students, as well as oneself.

Judo is practiced by both men and women of all ages beginning around age 5.  Persons with physical impairments are also welcome to participate.

Judo can compliment existing sports ( wrestling, football, soccer, etc...) by providing improved reflexes, outstanding strength training, excellent cardiovascular fitness, and superlative self confidence.

Our Judo motto is "Maximum Efficiency for the Energy Expended for the Mutual Welfare and Benefit for All."

All of us at the Mid Missouri Judo Club take this motto to heart.  Not only in practice, but outside the dojo in our everyday lives.

Our head coach  is Randy Russell  Shichidan  ( 7th degree black belt )
Randy began practicing judo in 1963, and began teaching in 1969.
Throughout his 41+ years of experience, Sensei Russell has had the opportunity to train and compete with the top judo coaches and competitors in the world.  During his competitive years, he was selected to compete against Olympic teams from Japan, Germany, and Korea.
Sensei Russell has had many opportunities in his judo career and he makes sure that all his students receive the same.  Many of his students have trained at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, USA Stars Olympic Development Center in Oklahoma, and at the prestigious Kodokan Dojo in Japan.

Other instructors include Glenn St. John  Yodan ( 4th degree black belt ),  Randy Mitchell   Sandan ( 3rd degree black belt ),  Peter Shaughnessy  Sandan ( 3rd degree black belt ), and Rick Younger  Nidan ( 2nd degree black belt ).

Mid Missouri Judo dedicates itself to this martial art in a variety of ways.  We frequently host tournaments and clinics, and have provided self defense seminars for law enforcement academies and schools.

We practice at Pro Fitness which is located at 3210 Vandiver Dr., next to Bass Pro Shop.

Our class times are as follows:

Feel free to work out with us for a couple of weeks at no charge, or just come check it out to see if Judo is something for you.

We have good hard workouts and have a great time.
