Zak & Lizzie

Zachary was a six-month-old baby without sight when he first met 12 pounds of puppy fluff named Lizzie.  The little bichon frise knew, with doggie insight, that Zak was special and might be able to appreciate an extra dose of what Lizzie does best: licks and snuggles.  Lizzie licked Zak's fingers and toes and poked her cold nose into his warm tummy, each time making Zak smile and giggle.  When the excitement was too much for both of them, Lizzie plopped down beside Zak's baby chair, and the two of them were soon snoring in unison, Zak's hand resting on Lizzie's head.  Thus began a magical boy/dog friendship and the book Zak & Lizzie.
Zak was born three years ago with hydrocephalus and optic nerve hypoplasia, unable to distinguish light and dark.  He now has limited vision which he is being taught to optimize through a team of therapists and a special needs pre-school.

Zak's conditions have led his parents to establish the One Small Voice Foundation to research these conditions and offer hope to other little Zak's.

Optic nerve hypoplasia, the absence or underdevelopment of the nerves between the eye and the brain, is one of the leading causes of blindness in infants in the US.

Hydrpcephalus, the build up of spinal fluid in the brain, affects approximately two infants in 1000.
