In this book, unlikely friendships were formed as everyone struggled to hold onto the ones they loved. Livvie, Caleb, Alison and Rafe went into hiding and were forced to work together to protect themselves from Joshua who was out to rule the vampire world and turn the entire town into his own vampire nation, and who also had his eyes dead set on marrying Alison! In the end Rafe, Caleb and Livvie were able to rescue Alison from Joshua's clutches and Rafe slayed Joshua. Jamal was turned into a vampire, and worked for Joshua for a while, but ended up choosing to help Alison who was under Joshua's control. More turmoil laid ahead for Lucy and Ian, as Lucy lost her slayer powers, and Ian was faced with the possibility of losing Lucy forever after he found out that she was dying. Kevin started seeing Elizabeth, but was hooked on a drug that Joshua created for him, which caused an unlikely friendship to form between Kevin and Karen as she helped him overcome his addiction. Karen and Frank broke up after Joshua turned Frank into a vampire, and he became Joshua's loyal henchman. In the end, Karen died after being hit by a car while running away from Frank who threatened bite her, and she became an angel. And since Ian found out that only an angel's blood could prevent Lucy from dying, Karen's blood was able to bring Lucy back from her deathbed and also caused her to get her slayer powers back. Jack and Reese's relationship continued to grow, while after some twists and turns, Casey and Ricky finally got back together and made love which unfortunately for their relationship,caused her to get sent back up to heaven.
