Zuhela's Dance Ethics

From the Gilded Serpent and written by Yasmin.

Warning. There is a great deal of passive aggressive face-saving behavior in this profession, It is not always woman friendly either. Respect is not a given...

In times of trouble it can be helpful to remember the saying. "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." Know that it is Not selling out to be sweet but firm in the face of adversity, especially with Middle Easterners. Tempers flare, stress happens, but it is foolish to end up on an eternal blacklist for one hotheaded remark. That is not to say don't stand up for yourself. Just try to leave your emotions out of business conversations. It is after all only a job Perhaps you will wake up the next morning with a different perspective. One more thing , if a situation turns into a question of honor for a Middle Easterner, things can get blown all out of proportion. It doesn't matter who is wrong or right. Saving face is what is important, and if the dancer is not careful she with often find herself turned into a scapegoat.

Getting this e-mail from the Gilded Serpent was interesting. I found myself in a similar situation. Sometimes all jobs can not be given to all the dancers.

In a class room setting, tempers may flare because one may not agree with corrections. Teaching for 40 years has given me an insite to bad behavior in a student.

It is unprofessional to not show up at an event where you have been given a spot to perform. Once our dancers are to be at a time and place they will always be there.

The Benat Sharkien Dancers
Some times you perform at an event and you have to navigate cross-cultural waters. You have to use your essential skills to be successful and capture your audience. The Benat Sharkien performed at a Spanish Festival in Gainesville on September 22, 2007and found out understanding the audience's reactions, and how they can interact with you and each other. When an audience behavior is annoying think of a way to discourage it with out offending anyone.
